Identities in Transition in the English-Speaking World

Contemporary consumer culture and globalising pressures tend to dissolve one’s sense of emplacement and allow for the creation of ‘transition spaces’ wherein one’s identities (intentionally in the plural) are continuously negotiated and moulded – when not even marginalised, silenced or distorted – in and through discourse. In the context of the language-and/as-power debate, this volume focuses on doing identity work in a variety of discourse domains. The essays by scholars from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, the UK and the USA range from linguistics and literature to translation and culture. Issues concerning teaching cultural identity, transculturality and ‘otherness’ are also addressed.
