Exploring and Translating Legal Discourse on Sustainability
Within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this volume investigates how sustainability is framed within European Union legislation and provides insights into the power relations embedded in legal discourse and, in particular, in specific lexicogrammatical choices in EU regulatory texts. The volume offers a critical examination of how, in the context of sustainability discourse, accountability can be obscured while specific courses of action can be legitimised. More precisely, sustainability – frequently positioned in legal discourse as a foundational principle – is strategically constructed through language to foreground or mitigate crucial environmental, social, financial and economic objectives. Through comparative analysis of parallel English and Italian EU regulatory texts, the role of translation in shaping sustainability discourse is also investigated. The volume, intended for scholars in the fields of sustainability discourse and translation studies, offers critical insights into how legal discourse can, and does, influence sustainable development across diverse cultural and linguistic contexts.

Pietro Manzella
Pietro Manzella is a Fixed-term Type B Researcher (RTDb) in English Linguistics and Translation at the Dipartimento di Lingue e Letterature, Comunicazione, Formazione e Società (DILL) of the University of Udine, where he carries out research in the areas of Translation Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis with a special focus on legal and sustainability discourse, an interest he developed when studying for his PhD in Labour Relations at the Faculty of Economics, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Association for International and Comparative Studies in Labour Law and Industrial Relations (ADAPT) for many years and was also a Visiting Fellow at the ILR School, Cornell University (USA), in 2014.
